The meeting between Greek Finance Minister Yannis Varoufakis and his British counterpart George Osborne lasted 45 minutes and ended with statements made only by the host. Known for his eccentric dress code, Varoufakis appeared at Downing Street clad in a leather jacket, a coloured shirt and no tie, and left without saying a word after the meeting.
George Osborne, however, characterised the meeting as constructive and said that he urged Varoufakis to act responsibly, adding that "The standoff between Greece and the eurozone is the greatest risk to the global economy. It is a rising threat to the British economy. And we have got to make sure that in Europe, as in Britain, we choose competence over chaos."
Later Yannis Varoufakis talked with representatives of the financial elite in London. "We can service our debt under conditions, which will not have any negative impact on bondholders," the Greek Finance Minister told representatives of almost 100 banks and financial institutions in the City.
