A record number of Greeks voted yesterday in the party elections for New Democracy leader. According to official representatives of the Greek conservatives, over 400,000 people exercised their right to vote. The unconfirmed data show that former party leader and former chairman of the Greek parliament Vangelis Meimarakis has received the highest support, 40%. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the son of honorary party chairman and former Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis ranks second with about 30% support. Third is governor of Central Macedonia Apostolos Tzitzikostas. Adonis Georgiadis, former Minister of Health and current speaker of the Parliamentary Group of New Democracy ranks last with minimal support.
The final battle for leadership of the conservatives will be on 10 January and will involve Vangelis Meimarakis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Mitsotakis announced that he would run in the second round, no matter how great Meimarakis’ lead is. Tzitzikostas and Georgiadis’ statements are awaited with interest to clarify whether they will support one of the two rivals in the second round and who.
