Athens is blocked due to the bad weather, which flooded many streets and caused a lot of traffic. The situation throughout the country was not better. The worst situation was in Iliya, where in the early afternoon a tornado formed and caused a lot of material damages.
Strong winds raved throughout the country and in many places they were 9 Beaufots strong. This forced Civil Protection to forbid all ships form going out at sea until the storm called down. Pouring rains showered Greece and thunderstorms were part of it all. In Athens the pouring rain caused a lot of traffic, because the roads were flooded. Many traffic lights were out of order due to the storm and they also contributed for the traffic.
The central Boulevard Piereos, which connects Omonia square and Pieria, was flooded. As a result the traffic was stopped in both lanes for a big period of time. The traffic on the highway, which leads to the international airport Eleftherios Venizelos, was also stopped for hours. The Athens fire department received tens of calls for flooded buildings and for fallen trees and billboards.
The bad weather caused problems throughout the country but the most problematic region was Iliya in Peloponnese, where a tornado passed through around noon. The tornado eradicated 30 trees, destroyed 4 houses and caused many material damages in the villages and neighborhoods around Ancient Olympia. The pouring rain also destroyed a lot of agricultural land in Peloponnese.
Based on meteorological forecasts the bad weather will continues also tonight but it will not be as extreme as it was yesterday during the day. From tomorrow the weather in Greece will improve.
