A strong earthquake rocked Athens shortly after 8:30 am today. According to the Geodynamics Institute at the National Observatory of Athens, its magnitude was 3.3 on the Richter scale and the seismic focus was at a depth of 5 km.
The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Athens suburb of Maroussi, about 10 km northeast of the centre of Athens. So far, there is no information on injuries or damage.
Despite the relatively low magnitude, the earthquake was felt very strongly. Director of the Geodynamics Institute Akis Tselendis explained that this was because the epicentre was under Athens and the seismic focus was shallow.
"If the quake had occurred elsewhere it simply would not have been registered," said Tselendis to the Greek television Mega.
Seismologists say there is no reason for concern about a prolonged seismic activity.
