Students, who competed in the competition for creation of open software for Digital environment in Europe offered by xirafia.gr, were personally awarded by the Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou. The award ceremony was also attended by European Commissioner of Media and Information Society Viviane Reding, Chief Secretary for Information Systems Diomedis Spinelis and director of Informatics of ΜΙΤ MediaLab Michalis Bletsas.
Students have created programs for electronic monitoring and prevention of natural disasters, to assist in energy saving, energy tracking productivity, etc. The contest is part of the program "Information Society" funded by the EU to enable students to learn to apply technology and informatics in order to get visible results on issues that affect the Europeans, to create software for the environment and to induce creative thinking and represent innovations that young scientists create in Greece.
The winners received prizes worth a total of €14 000, and the award ceremony was held in the Teoharaki Foundation. First awarded project was Eco Truck: Internet application for improvement of the process of collecting paper for recycling. The software was developed by students in the Thessaloniki School of Economics Macedonia - Catherine and Nikolaos Sidiropulu Beziryanis. They will share the sum of €6000, which was awarded for project. With Eco Truck collection of paper by trucks could be made faster and more environmentally friendly while spending less gas by taking certain routes, improves the service is performed in less time and reduces the cost of shipment.
Second place was given to the project e-Receipt by Kiriakos Tumbas from the National Polytechnic University Metsovio and to Valentinos Evripidu from the Economic University of Athens. The project is about a system for issuing electronic receipts through which those receipt no longer need to be printed and the goal is to decrease consumption of paper. Through this e-management, users can view and keep their receipts and bills and a site and keep records of them more easily.
The project e-cology received a third place and a cash prize of €3000. This project is an internet platform for collecting and displaying data on environmental pollution by a mobile phone made by Sarandis Makudis from the University of Piraeus and Konstantinos Karakatsionis from the Economics University of Athens.
