The ethics commission of the Greek parliament has submitted a proposal for the withdrawal of the parliamentary immunity of three of Golden Dawn’s deputies, namely George Germenis, also known as Kiadas, Panagiotis Iliopoulos and Efstathios Boukouras. The investigators of the case of extremists’ activities intend to charge them with heading and involvement in a criminal organization aimed at infringing the state system. The indictment states that the three took part in the preparation of attacks on democratic institutions.
The ethics commission has also submitted a proposal for the withdrawal of the immunity of another three members, due to various offences: Elias Kasidiaris for the clashes in Crete, Ilias Panagiotaros for disturbing the peace and Chrisovalandis Alexopoulous for the establishment of an illegal radio station.
The commission's decision has been adopted by eight votes "for" and one "abstained" from Golden Dawn. The vote on the decision of the plenary of the parliament will take place on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the investigating judicial authorities submitted to the Ministry of Justice a new document requesting the withdrawal of the immunity of deputy Eleni Zaroulia, the wife of the already detained leader of Golden Dawn, Nikos Michaloliakos.
The reasoning of the request states that she would be charged with illegal possession of ammunition, referring to a 7.65 mm cartridge which had been found in her travel bag while she was visiting her husband at the police headquarters in Attica. The pre-trial file of the case states, "A cartridge with the inscription ‘Geco 7.65’ on the bottom was found in a side pocket of her travelling bag during her visit to the prison of the police headquarters at 4:40 pm on 30 September 2013."
When the parliament votes for the withdrawal of her parliamentary immunity Eleni Zaroulia will be charged with illegal possession of ammunition and for bringing it to the police station.
At the same time, an amendment has been submitted to the parliament, which provides for the termination of state funding of those parties in parliament whose members are accused of forming a criminal organization.
While the investigation of the activities of the Golden Dawners is continuing, new revelations show how deeply they have penetrated the police circles. According to an article in To Vima newspaper, only a few months ago hundreds of policemen were about to form a "Golden police", i.e. an official trade union body of Golden Dawn. The policemen in question had had direct contact with party members and in practice, had planned to express, in the most formal manner, their extreme positions for dealing with foreigners and other social groups.
However, the leadership of the Greek police and representatives of the trade union bodies of the policemen were able to thwart their intentions before the extremist policemen implemented them.
