Former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras acknowledged the loss of his party shortly before 11:00 pm. In statements that he made at the international press centre established for the elections he said that compared with the election results in 2012 New Democracy has lost only 2%, despite the severe austerity measures.
Samaras said that from now on his party will play a key role as a guarantor of stability, security and of the reforms to be carried out.
Earlier, in a telephone conversation with the leader of SYRIZA, Samaras congratulated him on the election outcome. "I appreciate it," Alexis Tsipras replied. "This is political culture," said Samaras.
