According to the first official results of the vote, SYRIZA has won the European elections in Greece with a lead of 3.9%. The ruling New Democracy remains second, with 22.8% of votes, followed by Golden Dawn with 9.3%.
The ranking of the other parties, according to the results of the count of votes up to 10:00 p.m. is the following: “Elia” - 8.1%, To Potami - 6.7%, the Communist Party of Greece - 6%, Independent Greeks - 3.4%, LAOS - 2.8%, Greek European Citizens - 1.4%, and Democratic Left - 1.3%.
Yiannis Boutaris is the biggest winner in the race for the municipality of Thessaloniki, which he will manage over the next four years. In a statement, he stressed that the city's residents voted for a mayor, and not for a party.
The new mayor of Piraeus is football boss Yiannis Moralis. His main opponent and former mayor Vassilis Michaloliakos admitted that he lost shortly after 9:00 p.m., when, according to preliminary results, Moralis was leading the race by more than 50% of the vote in his favour.
SYRIZA candidate for Attica Rena Dourou seems to be winning the battle against former governor Yiannis Sgouros, but the difference between them is still minimal.
Former mayor of Athens and independent candidate for a second term George Kaminis is also leading the race with SYRIZA candidate Gabriel Sakelaridis, but with a rate which is not convincing enough. The mayor of Athens is expected to be announced after the counting of more than half of the votes.
In the region of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Dzidzikostas won against New Democracy candidate Yiannis Ioannidis with a huge difference (70.67% versus 29.33% in 25% of counted votes). Dzidzikostas is also a member of New Democracy, but ran as an independent candidate after the management of the party decided that not he, but Ioannidis would be the party's candidate for the region.
