SYRIZA writes off the debt with TV ads

Another storm of sharp reactions on the part of the opposition is provoked by the dissemination of television spots aimed at promoting the initiative of the president of parliament to form a commission on the truth about the debt. Yesterday at a press conference, Zoe Konstantopoulou presented data on the composition of this commission and the activities planned over the next two months.

The controversial TV spot, starting with the logo of the Greek parliament, contains slogans such as "I want to know the truth", shows that the debt has increased in the years of the memorandum and ends with the words "Check it out - Write it off."

Mentioning "writing off" the debt through the commission that is headed by the president of parliament is particularly important in view of the fact that the ruling party to which Zoe Konstantopoulou belongs has officially abandoned this rhetoric. The constant statements by the Prime Minister and key ministers who promise that Greece will meet its obligations to the creditors are well known.

Spokesman of New Democracy Kostas Karagounis speaks of a "pathetic party propaganda, which is a direct affront on democracy." "Parliament is neither a propaganda tool of a one-party state nor a party propaganda tool", adds Karagounis.

Potami party deputy Christina Tachiaou asked a question during the parliamentary control, insisting on making public the cost of functioning of the specific commission as well as information on who had approved and paid for the creation of the advertising spots.

"Zoe Konstantopoulou has turned parliament into a tool for promoting her own agenda, and the TV channel of the parliament into a personal propaganda tool," reads the announcement of PASOK.

Zoe Konstantopoulou herself said during yesterday's press conference, "I do not know what exactly annoys them. The advertising spot burdens neither the parliament, nor its TV channel." The president of parliament took advantage of the press conference to respond to the criticisms of her political opponents, speaking of "defamation and slander", "The commission has nothing to fear. We are ready to deal with all this. It is not surprising that even before its formation the commission is provoking the reaction of those who feel threatened," she said, turning her criticism to the media. In terms of the publications that have raised the issue of the costs of functioning of the commission, Zoe Konstantopoulou stressed that its members were not paid, the only covered costs being those of their travel, accommodation and meals. She also added that the room cost was 90 euro instead of the 130 euro paid for the overnight stays of foreign guests during the Greek Presidency of the European Union.
