Two months after the first pro-government demonstrations in Athens over 3,000 Athenians gathered in Syntagma Square outside the Greek Parliament to urge the government to continue its hard line in the negotiations with creditors.
"Stop austerity! Support Greece! Change Europe!", "Not a step back!", "European People All Together!", "EU – Empire’s Union" were some of the slogans that could be read during the demonstration.
Well organized, the protesters carried red flags, a symbol of the red lines of Alexis Tsipras’ government that he promised not to cross in the negotiations.
Here and there, stands selling sunflower seeds, ice cream and flags violated the red lines. Deputies from the two ruling parties, the Coalition of the Radical Left SYRIZA and the far-right Independent Greeks, could be seen among the demonstrators.
To the delight of demonstrators president of the Greek Parliament Zoe Kostantopoulou appeared at the event as well. Several hours earlier, she had returned the report to Governor of the Bank of Greece Yiannis Stournaras because she had received it in ... an electronic format, not on paper. For the supporters of SYRIZA, however, this was rather a manifestation of strong mindedness.
