Three foreigners were injured in the clashes that broke out on Thursday evening in the Taekwondo hall in Palaio Faliro, which is housing hundreds of illegal migrants. They were brought from Idomeni on the Greek-Macedonian border on Wednesday. An ambulance arrived at the scene and took the injured.
The condition of the injured is not yet known but unconfirmed reports appeared earlier on stab injuries with screwdrivers.
Tension seems to have been caused by drunken migrants who quarrelled among themselves.
The decision to transfer migrants from Idomeni to Athens has provoked the sharp reaction of the mayors of Alimos, Glyfada, Elliniko-Argyroupoli and Palaio Faliro. In an open letter to Deputy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas who is in charge of migration policy, they express their concern over the increased influx of illegal migrants in southern Athens and over accommodating them in the hall for field hockey in the Olympic Village in Elliniko and in that for Taekwondo in Palaio Faliro without a preliminary plan.
