Three mental patients have died in a fire in the psychiatric clinic in the Athens district of Daphne. The flames had enveloped the ground floor of the clinic, which accommodates the patients in serious conditions, the cause for them being unknown at present. It is not clear whether the patients died of suffocation or if they were burnt to death. The tragedy occurred very quickly, the flames were thick and suffocating, and the staff were unable to untie the patients so that they could escape.
There are unconfirmed reports of a missing patient too. The clinic has been evacuated, there are 11 fire engines with 33 firefighters on the site of the disaster. The fire department has confirmed the number of casualties. According to the newspaper Ethnos, a patient in the psychiatric clinic had intentionally caused the fire.
