Three people were killed in a shootout in the region of Vrodero village near the town of Florina and the Greek-Albanian border. The tragedy began when a patrol of three police officers was carrying out a routine check for illegal fishing in the region of Small Prespa Lake. When they started checking the hut in which the two Albanians were located, they opened fire with Kalashnikov assault rifles against the patrol.

The killed police officer was the father of an 11-year-old girl.

The patrol was of the border police and it was checking signals of residents that Albanian poachers were stealing their fish. Since the hut was located in a difficult to pass area, the police officers left their car and walked for about half an hour up to the place where the poachers were assumed to be located. One of the police officers lifted the blanket that was serving as a door of the hut and when he saw people armed with Kalashnikovs, he tried to go back to his colleagues. The Albanians opened fire and killed him. The other two officers also opened fire and managed to kill one of the criminals, and later the second one.

This is Ilias Kostenis, border police officer in Florina, who was killed in performance of duty.

To be continued.
