Heavy rains and storms as well as hailstorms and strong winds are expected at some places in mainland Greece over the next few hours.

The newsflash of the metrological service states that the sharp deterioration of weather conditions will severely affect the following regions: Thessaly, eastern central Greece, Evia Island, and the Northern Sporades during the evening hours, and possibly the eastern and southern part of the Peloponnese.

Despite their intensity the meteorological phenomena will gradually subside by early Tuesday morning. The residents of those regions can monitor their development and obtain information on them from the weather forecasts of the National Weather Service, and from its website www.emy.gr.

The general secretariat for civil protection has requested the competent local government departments, regional governments and municipalities to be in a state of complete readiness to be able to immediately respond to the consequences of bad weather.

At the same time it recommends that citizens be especially careful in the coming days and take precautions against the dangers that could arise from the severe weather.

In particular, the civil protection service advised the citizens:

- To fortify those items which the heavy rains can sweep away and that could cause damage or injury.

- To check to see if the gutters and drain-pipes of their houses are clogged and, if so, to clean them.

- To be informed of the weather conditions and the conditions of the road surface if they are going to travel and to change the hour of their trip to avoid the peak of the severe phenomena.

- To avoid passing through rivers and streams on foot or by car during both the phenomena and a few hours after they have subsided.

- To avoid working outdoors and being in the sea or on the coast during the storms.

- To observe the instructions issued in such situations by the local government institutions.
