In Thessaloniki, a transgender woman was attacked and severely beaten up by a man who drove her to a deserted area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, in the early morning. The victim was walking back home when a man approached and offered her a ride in his car. The woman refused, which provoked a reaction from the perpetrator. First he attacked her verbally, and later physically, by squeezing her throat and hitting her with his fists.

The woman was forced to enter the vehicle and the offender drove her to a deserted area. There he forced her to exit the car and began to hit her. Once again he squeezed her throat, covering her mouth and nose, grabbed the 30 euro he found in her purse, and fled with the car, leaving the victim in a very bad condition.

Despite the shock, the woman managed to memorise the number of the car and reported the incident to the police. The attacker was arrested and after his hearing, he was sent to jail until the case against him commences.

The incident, defined by the Transgender Support  Association as "a racist attempted murder with elements of fascism", provoked some questions raised by the organisation:

The question regarding revision of the Presidential Decree for establishing units to combat racist violence, where sexual orientation and gender identity must be included too in order to effectively investigate and combat crimes motivated by racism and transphobia.

Implementation of the European Parliament Directive "to ensure the rights of the victims of criminal acts across the European Union", adopted in September 2012 and clearly including sexual orientation and gender identity.
