Tsipras offers an extraordinary congress and internal party referendum

Alexis Tsipras proposed to the central party committee to hold an extraordinary congress in September to answer the question as to how the government and SYRIZA itself would continue after the rupture in the party.

However, if the internal opposition insisted on taking a decision immediately, even before the completion of the agreement on the new rescue programme, with the explicit purpose of its cancellation, the Greek Prime Minister proposed that a referendum among party members take place on Sunday.

Thus, Alexis Tsipras threw the gauntlet to those who disagree with him, urging them to stand in front of all and to speak out. Having stressed that "there was and there is no better alternative than the compromise we have adopted", the Prime Minister urged those who believe they could achieve a better agreement to come out and say it.

"If someone thinks that another government, another prime minister, could achieve something better, let him say it from this rostrum. If someone believes that SYRIZA has abandoned the people, let him say it. If someone believes that SYRIZA should abandon the government, let him say it. If someone believes that the agreement reached is the worst of the three memoranda, let him explain with arguments."

Alexis Tsipras, however, raised the issue of commitment of all with regard to the decision that would result from the internal party referendum or congress. "Whatever the decision is, we must agree with mutual respect and trust that the decisions will be taken into account and that the absurdity of the strange dichotomy within the party parliamentary group will cease. It is not possible for some to believe that we could endlessly continue with the votes of other parties and for part of our parliamentary group to state that the agreement is a disaster for the country and simultaneously support the government."

At the same time, the Prime Minister specified the responsibility of all, leaving open the possibility of early elections, stressing that the first left government "will either be supported by left deputies or will fall because of left deputies."

As for the agreement with the partners, he again noted that there was no better alternative.

"We had to take difficult decisions leaving Greek society, but also the central party committee, to judge them. We chose to try all options, we came to the brink of rupture, thinking about how to achieve a better agreement, gain time, regroup and not to bring the country to economic disaster. At present there is no better alternative," the Greek Prime Minister emphasized again.
