Former Greek Minister of Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos is the new Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs. The post enters into the composition of the European Commission for the first time due to "the catastrophic influx of immigrants in the southern countries of the European Union, in the Middle East and North Africa," as stated by President Jean-Claude Juncker, before his election, in an interview for the Belgian media.
The Greek government had expressed its desire for the Greek commissioner to occupy the post immediately after the elections. During his visit to Athens in early August, European Commission President Juncker refused to directly answer whether the request would be satisfied, adding that Greece would not be disappointed.
The second Greek in the new European Commission is Margaritis Schinas, who is appointed its spokesman. He is a former MEP and long-time senior official of the institution.
Commissioner from Cyprus Christos Stilianidis is in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, a post that was recently held by Kristalina Georgieva.
