Two strong earthquakes, of 5.1 and 4.8 on the Richter scale, rocked Lesbos Island early this morning. According to the Institute of Geodynamics at the Athens National Observatory, the tremors were registered at 3.45 AM and 8.20 am on Saturday, from an epicentre 244 km northeast of Athens, in the sea south of Plomari. Their depth is estimated at roughly 29-30 km below the seabed.
The earthquakes were felt by the island’s inhabitants, but there have been no reports of casualties or material damage.
A few hours earlier, at 23.16 h on Friday, an earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was registered on the neighbouring island of Chios as well.
