The US Ambassador, David D. Pearce, will end prematurely his stay in Athens. He leaves in June, a year early. According to diplomatic sources, the State Department leadership decided Pearce was not active enough and failed to provide enough information about political and economic events at a time when Greece is at the centre of discussions even in the White House.
Pearce allegedly failed to inform Washington of the bill, which provides for the release of Savvas Ksiros from prison. A senior Greek government official has reportedly told the US ambassador: "If you had informed us in time about your strong dissatisfaction, we would have settled the matter otherwise."
It is believed that Pearce’s replacement has already been nominated, and is likely to be fast-tracked through Congress because of the crucial importance of this summer’s developments in Greece.
Pearce was sworn in as US Ambassador to the Foreign Secretary John Kerry on 5 September 2013.
He is a diplomat with 30 years of service and experience in the Middle East. In the past, he was deputy to the special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. At the same time, he served as assistant state secretary for South and Central Asia.
Pearce was also deputy head of the US mission in Kabul, ambassador to Algeria in 2008-2011, head of mission and consul general of the USA in Jerusalem in 2003-2005.
