A group of transgender women had been attacked last Friday in Exarcheia neighbourhood in central Athens, becoming the subject of a harsh verbal assault. A day later, another transgender woman was attacked with offensive language and then hit in an underground carriage near Panepistimio station.
The organisation supporting transgender persons condemns the actions of both the attackers and the nearby policemen. According to its statement, when the policemen had realized that the object of the attack was a transgender woman, they had tried to persuade her not to file a complaint with the police and advised her to stop complaining about the attacks.
She subsequently filed a complaint in court against both the attackers and the policemen.
The organisation condemns "the constant attacks and the transphobic societal attitudes, merging its voice with that of other organisations and citizens who are committed to building a wall against discrimination and attacks made as a result of hatred towards transgender persons."
In the summer of 2013, GRReporter had informed its readers about the frequent attacks on transgender persons, including by the police.
