A woman died during this morning's earthquake in Lefkada. A wall collapsed on top of her, as a local publication, lefkadapress.gr, reported.
A snapshot taken by a reader appeared earlier on in another local media: it shows a collapsed retaining wall along the road near the village of Karia.
According to early reports, the earthquake has caused major damage in the village of Athani located very close to the epicentre. An Athani resident told the Greek television Mega, that both churches of the village and several houses have been torn down.
Meanwhile, the American Geological Institute said that according to its measurements, the quake had a 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory, the quake's magnitude was 6.1, and according to their counterparts in Thessaloniki – 6.3 on the Richter scale.
According to early reports after the earthquake, the latter caused substantial damage in the village of Athani located very close to the epicentre. An Athani resident told Mega, that both churches of the village and at least 10 houses have been destroyed. Located in the south-western part of the island, Athani has sustained massive damage across other buildings as well.
Shortly after 10.30 a.m., a 5.2 Richter aftershock also took place. At the same time, it was reported that an electricity pole fell on a woman in another part of Lefkada and injured her. There are reports that the island's higher altitude areas have seen rockslides. The road to the famous Egremni beach has literally disappeared under massive rock pileups.
Pictures of Lefkada residents on social networks show the road situation in the whole southern part of the island. According to the Athens News Agency, the coastal road has been severed in several places. The earthquake has caused major damage to the harbour in Vasiliki as well. According to Coast Guard sources, half of the port is under water.
