Shocking reports on trading in babies outside fertility clinics have been received by the bureau for citizen support in the region of Epirus in northwestern Greece.

According to the reports, scammers involved in a network for illegal adoptions were not hesitant to be "on duty" outside the clinics and to try to attract potential victims, even handing out to them "business" cards with phones and contact details.

Taking advantage of the strong desire of couples to have a child and the lengthy bureaucratic procedures for formal adoption that last up to five years, they were promising to provide a healthy newborn through ... the legal process of private adoption, within less than one year.

The head of the bureau for citizen support in the Epirus region Apostolos Oikonomou states for the newspaper Ethnos that the service has received at least two reports on mothers from Bulgaria and Belarus. According to the data, these mothers were lured by being paid 5,000 euro whereas the adoptive parents paid up to 30,000 euro, which the gang members divided among themselves.
