Greeks do not believe that the existing political parties are able to govern the country according to the results of the "Political Barometer" poll conducted by Public Issue agency between 6 and 11 September.
54% of respondents said they do not trust either party. However, 20% expressed their confidence in the ability of New Democracy to help the country emerge from the crisis. The respective percentages of support are 12% for SYRIZA, 9% for PASOK, 8% for Democratic Left, 5% for the xenophobic Golden Dawn, 4% for Independent Greeks and 3% for the Communist Party. In contrast, only two months ago, i.e. in July this year, the percentage of non-confidence in the political system was 39%.
79% of Greeks do not approve the way the government tackles the problems of the country. They are even more discontented with the position of the opposition - the percentage of disapproval is 85%. 20% of respondents said they are satisfied with the government and 13% - with the opposition parties.
38% of the people believe that if there were new elections, New Democracy would win them again as well as the second party with a small difference. 31% believe the winner would be the radical left SYRIZA with a slight difference. According to 10% of the participants, SYRIZA would be able to win with a higher percentage over its main opponent and 5% gave the lead to New Democracy with a higher percentage over the second party too. The general votes show that 43% of Greeks believe that New Democracy will win the elections and 41% are confident that SYRIZA will be the winner.
At the top of the ranking for the best opposition policy pursued is SYRIZA with 32%. Then follow Independent Greeks with 14%, Golden Dawn with 13% and the communists with 10%. 24% of respondents did not indicate any party.
The most popular party is the Democratic Left with 47%, followed by SYRIZA with 42%, Independent Greeks with 40%, New Democracy with 38%, PASOK with 23%, Golden Dawn with 22% and the Communist Party with 19%. However, compared to the poll held in May, the popularity of Democratic Left fell by 15% and that of Golden Dawn increased by 10%.
The most popular among political leaders is the head of Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis with 52%. Next are Alexis Tsipras with 42%, Antonis Samaras and Panos Kamenos with 39%, Evangelos Venizelos with 29%, the leader of Golden Dawn Nikos Mihaloliakos with 22% and Aleka Papariga with 20%. Compared with the results of the poll in May, Fotis Kouvelis registered the largest drop in popularity – 15% lower than before. Accordingly, the greatest increase in popularity has been registered for the leader of xenophobes Nikos Mihaloliakos - 8%.
40% of respondents believe that Antonis Samaras is the most suitable for prime minister and 29% stated Alexis Tsipras. 28% do not like either of them. Among the leaders of all parliamentary groups, "no one," with a vote of 30%, proved to be the most suitable person for prime minister followed by Antonis Samaras – 22%, Alexis Tsipras – 17%, Evangelos Venizelos – 10%, Fotis Kouvelis – 8%, Panos Kamenos – 6%, Nikos Mihaloliakos and Aleka Papariga – 3%. The May results were Alexis Tsipras – 22%, Antonis Samaras – 20%, Evangelos Venizelos – 16% and 17% of participants stated "no one."
29% of polled citizens responded that they trust the Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras to solve the economic problems of Greece a lot/quite. 64% trust him a little/do not trust him at all. In November 2011, 21% of people trusted the Finance Minister at that time Evangelos Venizelos a lot/quite and 78% - a little/do not trust him at all.
Regardless of the party for which they vote, 37% of respondents believe the government coalition of New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left is able to better cope with the problems of the country. 23% of the people prefer the government of SYRIZA and 34% - none of them.
68% expect early elections to be announced, while 23% believe that the coalition cabinet will be able to complete its four-year term.
According to 74%, things in Greece are moving in the wrong direction. In July this year, this was the opinion of 66% and of 86% of Greeks in May. 19% of respondents in the latest poll shared the opposite view. In July, 23% of people were of the same opinion and in May – they were only 6%.
According to 9%, Greece's international position has become stronger than last year. In May, 6% of respondents were of this opinion. 60% believe the country is in a more negative position and 31% see no change.
46% of Greeks believe that their country is not likely to go bankrupt in the next 12 months. 38% think it is possible and 13% believe that the bankruptcy is already a reality. Among the voters of the three parties with the highest number of voters in the last election, 25% of New Democracy voters, 50% of SYRIZA’s supporters and 23% of those of PASOK "forecast" bankruptcy.
88% of respondents believe that over the next 2-3 months, Greece will be the stage for many strikes and protests. 85% of people think that they or any other member of their family is directly affected by the new austerity measures planned by the government. Only 11% believe that the measures do not affect them.
