The strike of the ones serving time, in Greek prisons, is continuing for a second week. According to latest facts, 3390 prisoners continue a hunger strike, which was started by over 8000 people. Among the starving, there are children, under aged, and pregnant. In the Trikala prison, some strikers have ostentatiously stitched-up their mouths. Meanwhile, some right-protecting organizations are taking the sticker’s side and want an immediate improvement of the conditions under which the prisoners serve their time.

According to the right-protectors, the prisons are over-crowded more than twice, and the staff is insufficient. The hygienic conditions are awful, especially in the health sections of the prisons. Organizations like the Greek Lawyers Association, Amnesty International, and the Greek Union for Human Rights have all signed under the above conclusions. Last night they organized a big concert in the center of Athens in support of the starving prisoners.

Meanwhile, the prisons Central Science Council is gathering today, in which lawyers, prosecutors, attorneys, and criminal law specialists participate. They will discuss the proposals given by the prisoner representatives and will have to prepare their own proposals to the minister of justice, Sotiris Hatzidakis, which will have to refer to some changes in the Criminal Procedure Code as well as some reforms in the organization of Greek prisons.
