The condition of Konstantina Kouneva who was splashed with acid three days ago in Athens is slowly improving. Bulgarian consul Vassil Mitrovsky said for bTV that the injured woman does not have temperature, engages in contact with the others and moves her limbs. Still, the doctors cannot determine whether one of the eyes is completely lost and if the other can be saved.
The Bulgarian society in Greece is deeply affected by the incident. “This is not a murder attempt over Konstantina, this is a murder attempt for three people,” said a friend of the injured. Konstantina Kouneva takes care of her 12 year old son Emanuel alone, who 6 years ago went through a serious heart surgery in the Athens cardio center “Alexander Onasis.” Konstantina also takes care of her old mother, who also went through a sever surgery during the summer and a heart attack in November.
Her mother Elena Decheva shared in front of bTV her mortification by Konstantina’s colleagues. For months she was trying to change from the third to the first shift so she cans spend more time with her son but her request was denied all the time. “I don’t want to see them in front of the hospital now. It is too late,” says the mother. She is determined to find the guilty ones for her daughter’s suffering. Right now she is trying to form a team of lawyers who will take over the case. This team includes a lawyer with whom Konstantina worked as a syndicate. The Bulgarian embassy has taken the responsibility to arrange another lawyer but the mother continues to look for more attorneys.
Around 100 people demonstrated yesterday in front of the “Evangelismos” hospital as a sign of support and compassion for Konstantina Kouneva, who is still in intensive care. 44 year old Kouneva is a syndicate leader of the cleaners and house maids and for some time now she and other colleagues of hers have received anonymous threats.
The demonstrators expressed their resentment for the accident and said that the attack against Konstantina Kouneva is terrorism and denied to accept the scenario for personal vendetta, which is brought forth by the media. Kouneva’s colleague talked about the ancient exploitation conditions, which exist in this field and against which Konstantina fought. As an example the demonstrators mentioned that the cleaners are put on a 5 and a half hour work day instead of 6 hours so they cannot get the dangerous workload overtime salary. They also blamed the public enterprises, including the hospitals that they hire cleaning ladies per hour and not with a stable salary in order to save paying for insurance.
A police patrol passed by while the demonstration around the hospital was going on, and some of the demonstrators started throwing stones at it. None of the policemen was hurt.
