During the last 10 years at least 19 women in Greece have been murdered by their husbands or by the men they were living with and the cases of home assault have reached a shameful number for EU country member in the beginning of the 21st century. The data was announced by the Women’s Association in Thessaloniki, which warned for a sudden increase in home assault. “Not passion, not jealousy and not poverty put a gun in the hand of the killer. The killer is armed by our patriarchal society, which gives him the legal and moral right to own a woman,” says the declaration of the Association, distributed by the media.
The Association warns that home abuse against women is the final expression of the man’s aspiration for owning the life and the body of a woman to such an extent that he wants to decide whether she should live or not. The organization calls for all women, who have become a victim of abuse by their own husbands not to keep it inside but to know that home abuse is a criminal act, just like any other. The Association also expresses its resentment by the unsatisfactory work of the Greek justice, which very often leaves killers unpunished and the criminal cases sink under dust for years.
